What I'm Doing in March

Meet Kenny and Dorien!  They're our neighbors on our Culver City hippie duplex compound, where we all live in peace and harmony.

Even our dogs are harmonious!
Dorien and Kenny are talented.  And generous.  And warm.  And hilarious.  So they've made the very wise choice to live happily ever after.
Gorgeous photo by the very talented Avi Rothman!

I adore weddings, but this one will forever hold a unique place in my heart.   Because...  Drumroll...  I'm making the wedding cake!!!  That's right!  A cake to be served at a real wedding!  Watch out Martha Stewart.

I have made countless birthday cakes and my fair share of holiday cakes, but this is the first time that cake from my kitchen will get smashed into bride and groom face on their biggest of big days.  And I could not be more thrilled.

I know you think I'm insane.  But if you're thinking that a wedding cake has to be a 4-foot tower of fondant and sugar flowers, think again.  Rather than one huge cake, I'll be assembling a "cake buffet".  There will be one brightly-colored two-tiered cake in the center, along with an assortment of single-tiered cakes and cupcakes in different flavors.  The bride and groom's favorite colors are aqua and orange (respectively), and their favorite flavors are carrot and red velvet (respectively).  Chocolate cake, coconut cake, vegan cupcakes, and this lemon cake will all be making appearances as well.

I've been testing recipes for a couple of weeks now, and I'm feeling confident with what I have.  I've also worked out a transportation plan, and the decorative details are coming together.  Mama Butter is coming down and spending the few days before the wedding with me, so I'm sure we'll have lots of fun photos to share.  That said, a bad dog has already gotten to one layer of practice cake, so I'm sure we'll have some unforseen challenges to overcome.  But I promise not to end up on Cake Wrecks...

The inspiration...                                                            The result (both photos from CakeWrecks.com)

I'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas!  Have you ever made cake for a huge group of people?  What is the best cake you've ever had at a wedding?  And do you think a wedding needs plain white cake, or are you happier with a flavor?

Can't wait to share the final result with you!

  2. My grandma used to make wedding cakes for a living. My all time favorite was her yellow cake with her cherry nut filling! I've never made it but one day I hope to get the recipe :)

As far as my opinion on plain white...I think it's more fun to have a unique cake experience with color, flavor and design...therefore, I love the idea of a cake buffet!

  3. I've decided that I don't want cake for my wedding (I'm on team pie anyway) so you're off the hook. That said, if I have to eat cake I prefer white with whipped cream frosting & some kind of fruit filling.

  4. Thanks for your thoughts on this! I'm on Team Non-Traditional, and don't even get me started on the whole "groom's cake" thing!
